Arizona Governor Ducey Proclaims Cord Blood Day - November 15th, 2021

10/22/2021

Picture
Save the Cord Foundation is thrilled to announce that the Governor of Arizona, Douglas Ducey has made an official proclamation making November 15th CORD BLOOD DAY for the state.

This proclamation coincides with celebrations worldwide for World Cord Blood Day, held on November 15th, 2021.

In the proclamation, Governor Ducey recognized why cord blood is so important:
  • cord blood stem cells can be used to treat and cure over 70 life threatening diseases;
  • donated cord blood units can be listed on the nation NMDP / Be The Match Registry where they are made available to any patient in need of a transplant or provided to Arizona researchers working on curing blood cancers and other diseases;
  • collecting and adding diverse units of cord blood is important because individuals of certain ethnic and mixed backgrounds are dramatically under represented on the national cord blood inventory.  Adding diverse units of umbilical cord blood to the registry increases the likelihood that patients from communities all across Arizona will find a life-saving cord blood match;
  • cord blood stem cell education also plays an important part in the STEM career platform for Arizona youth, students, and the bioscience community;
  • the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Arizona Biomedical Research Center, have partnered with Valleywise Health Medical Center, Dignity Health - St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Services, Dignity Health - Chandler Regional Medical Center, Tucson Medical Center and Save the Cord Foundation.

Announcing World Cord Blood Day 2021 - Educating Healthcare Professionals & Expectant Parents

9/7/2021

Picture
We are pleased to announce World Cord Blood Day 2021 (WCBD 2021) will take place on November 15th, 2021 for students, expectant parents and healthcare professionals around the globe.  More than 40,000 cord blood transplants have been performed worldwide since 1988 to treat over 80 life-threatening diseases.  Yet, cord blood is still thrown away as medical waste in the majority of births, often due to a simple lack of awareness. In the new post-Covid world, we can and must improve this.

CELEBRATE, LEARN and SHARE!

Now in its 5th year, World Cord Blood Day 2021 will be held both online and live thanks to hundreds of local events hosted by WCBD Official Participants around the globe. Registration is now open at www.WorldCordBloodDay.org or via Eventbrite (free, public welcome, recommended for healthcare professionals).

Organized by Save the Cord Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit, World Cord Blood Day 2021 is officially sponsored by QuickSTAT Global Life Science Logistics, recognized leader in medical shipping and healthcare logistics. Inspiring Partners for this event include the Be the Match (NMDP), World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA-Netcord), AABB Center for Cellular Therapies, Cord Blood Association, and the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT).

"We invite you to join the global cord blood movement on November 15th. Join us for World Cord Blood Day 2021 to educate yourself and your community about this life-saving medical resource," said Charis Ober, Executive Director of Save the Cord Foundation.

In addition to the many live events globally, the free online conference will feature world-renowned researchers and transplant doctors leading a variety of presentations for the public as well as academic lectures specifically designed for those working in the medicine (Livestream launch at 10am EST Nov 15th, available on-demand until Nov 30th). In addition, a vibrant social media campaign will help build awareness (#WCBD21 #WorldCordBloodDay).

Attendees will learn about cord blood's vital role in stem cell transplants, particularly during Covid-19, to treat leukemia, thalassemia, sickle cell disease and more.  Attendees will also discover cord blood’s exciting potential in the field of regenerative medicine to potentially treat autism, cerebral palsy, stroke and more.

Visit www.WorldCordBloodDay.org to learn how you can participate on-line or host an event locally in your community.

World Marrow Donor Day 2021 - Thank You Donors!

8/26/2021

Join us on September 18th!

The World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA), a global association of blood stem cell, marrow and/or cord blood registries or organisations representing over 39 million blood stem cell donors from 55 different countries, announces the celebration of the 7th World Marrow Donor Day (WMDD) on 18th September 2021. Following the past six years of successful celebrations of this special day, the world again will come together on the 3rd Saturday of September. The primary purpose is to thank all donors and highlight global cooperation in blood stem cell transplantation.

“The World Marrow Donor Association was established 27 years ago to ensure that donations of stem cells by altruistic volunteers could find their way to the patients who needed them, independent of geography and politics. World Marrow Donor Day is the embodiment of the value, respect and indeed love we in the transplantation community (and particularly the patients suffering from life-threatening diseases and their families) offer to our donors. It is only one day but it reflects what we think year-round in a concentrated way.” – Jeff Szer, Past President of the WMDA.

Due to the ongoing global pandemic WMDA has again decided to celebrate WMDD 2021 virtually. This year’s online event will be a 24hr Live Stream, broadcasted on YouTube (https://youtu.be/lVwJp5hJDuM)  and made possible in collaboration with Golden Partner and supporter of the event,  time:matters, a global courier company that specialises in life-saving transports.

On every continent, patients, donors, blood stem cell and cord blood organisations have prepared videos to share in the celebration and to spread awareness.

What can we (you) do?

First and foremost, we want to express our gratitude to all of those parents who have donated their child's cord blood to the Arizona Public Cord Blood Program. This outstanding state-run collection program has given Arizonian parents the possibility to donate directly thanks to participating hospitals in the Arizona.  As the Official Education Partner for this program, we know how hard the AZ Public Cord Blood program team works to collect, process, store and distribute these life-saving cord blood units. We want to take this opportunity on World Marrow Donor Day to say THANK YOU!

Second, we want to ask you to learn more. Take advantage of the World Marrow Donor Day live stream to learn more about the Arizona Public Cord Blood Program. Join the live stream to watch our interview with Kristen Wilt, nurse and cord blood program co-ordinator at the Tucson Medical Center. She will explain in detail how cord blood collection works, how cord blood units are used and what makes the Arizona program special. It's a must see for parents and anyone wanting to understand how cord blood donation works.

Show your support and watch the live stream (starting September 18th), click "I SUPPORT SAVING LIVES":

Third, we ask you to share what you learn. Many families contact us frustrated that cord blood donation is not possible at their local hospital. Unfortunately, an easy answer does not exist. Public donation programs will only increase if awareness increases. You can help! Please share what you learn about public cord blood donation with the decision makers at your local hospital, local government and local parent groups.  Even one conversation could save a life.

About World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA)

Worldwide, over 50,000 patients per year are looking for a matched donor outside their family. About 50% of the patients that find a donor find his or her perfectly matched donor in another country. WMDA works towards a global standardisation by establishing an accreditation programme for organisations that provide blood stem cells for patients in need of a transplant. The accreditation programme ensures both welfare of the donors and provision of high-quality stem cells for patients worldwide.
