Over 90% Survival Rate Thanks to Cord Blood

It can be very scary to talk odds when discussing healthcare, especially for children. Pediatricians around the world will tell you how tricky it can be to help children fighting the same diseases as adults but not having access to the same treatments. This is can be due to many factors (fewer clinical trials for children, untested treatments for the younger age group, lack of child-friendly medications, etc.). This is why we got excited when we heard Dr. Caridad Martinez talking about a more than 90% survival rate for pediatric patients receiving a cord blood transplant for non-malignant diseases. We knew we needed to learn more! We are thrilled to welcome her as our next featured speaker on Share the Science.

In this session of Share the Science, Dr. Martinez will focus on the critical role of umbilical cord blood transplantation in curing pediatric patients with non-malignant disorders. Drawing on extensive clinical experience and published data, she will highlight survival outcomes exceeding 90% in children undergoing cord blood transplant for non-malignant diseases.

​In addition, she will also present recent North American data on severe combined immune deficiency, demonstrating that event-free and overall survival can surpass 90% when conditioning is used without serotherapy.

Finally, Dr. Martinez will discuss emerging evidence showing that careful selection of cord blood units—particularly optimizing cell dose and donor-recipient matching—can further improve outcomes to similarly high survival rates. These sessions are intended to highlight the significance of preserving cord blood units as an essential resource for curative treatments in pediatric patients.

Expert in pediatric stem cell transplantation and umbilical cord blood transplantation for immune and non‑malignant disorders.
 
Dr. Cary Martinez leads one of the nation’s largest pediatric cell therapy and bone marrow transplant programs, providing care for children with complex immune deficiencies and inherited blood disorders. Her program performs more than 140 bone marrow and cell therapy transplants annually and delivers care in a 25‑bed inpatient transplant unit, serving patients from all 50 states and more than 55 countries.
 
Her clinical and research focus centers on optimizing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation—including umbilical cord blood transplantation—conditioning strategies, and immune recovery. Dr. Martinez holds national leadership roles within cord blood and transplant organizations, leads multicenter studies through the NIH‑funded Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium (PIDTC), and has authored peer‑reviewed publications in leading journals such as Blood and The Lancet.
