Latest Research on Using Cord Blood for Perinatal Stroke & Acquired Hearing Loss: On December 2nd, 2015, we had the pleasure to welcome Dr. James Baumgartner as our featured speaker on Share the Science. Dr. Baumgartner is the Surgical Director of the Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Center at the Florida Hospital for Children. His presentation focused on preclinical data supporting the use of cord blood to treat acquired nervous system injury, and describe two ongoing clinical trials using autologous cord blood to treat acquired hearing loss and perinatal stroke in children.
Dr. Baumgartner’s research is truly changing the way we do medicine. Normally, there are no reparative treatment options available for perinatal stroke or hearing loss acquired early in life. Instead, treatment is usually focused on management options to improve the function of the brain or injured cochlea. However, Dr. Baumgartner’s pre-clinical data suggests that progenitor cell infusions may allow for at least partial repair of these acquired central nervous system injuries. Human umbilical cord blood is an available stored progenitor cell population available for therapeutic use.
In this webinar Dr. Baumgartner presents the pre-clinical data supporting the use of cord blood to treat acquired nervous system injury, and describe two ongoing clinical trials using autologous cord blood to treat acquired hearing loss and perinatal stroke in children.
